Ramesh* is a 21-year-old young man from Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra. He lives with his mother and elder sister. After his father passed away, the family faced a lot of financial struggles. His mother began working as a housemaid, while Ramesh had to take on responsibilities from a young age. He helped support his family by washing cars in his neighbourhood and later started a small bike and auto washing business. Though strong in appearance, Ramesh carried deep emotional stress, especially as he worried about his family’s wellbeing.

During this time, Ramesh was in a relationship with a girl in his area. Both were adults, but the girl’s family did not approve. The two decided to run away, but the girl’s mother filed a police case against Ramesh, accusing him of kidnapping. Ramesh was arrested and sent to Kalyan Prison. He had no legal support, and his mother didn’t know how to help. While in prison, he began to lose hope. He worried constantly about whether he would ever get out and even started to mix with bad company.

Ramesh came into contact with Sahaara through their Adult Literacy Class in the prison. While attending the sessions, he shared his story with the staff. The team stepped in immediately. They connected Ramesh with a lawyer, provided legal help, and supported him and his mother through the court process. The Sahaara staff also gave him basic counselling and guidance, which helped him reflect on his choices and focus on improving his life. After a few months, and with the support of the girl’s testimony, Ramesh was granted bail and released from prison.

After his release, Sahaara found Ramesh a job in a packing unit. A month later, with encouragement from his uncle, he decided to start his own small car and auto washing service. He approached the Sahaara team with this idea, and they helped him set up the business. Today, Ramesh works hard every day, earning money honestly and supporting his family. His mother continues to support him emotionally, and his uncle and aunt have also stood by his side.

Sahaara’s help changed the direction of Ramesh’s life. He now stays away from harmful people and focuses on growing his small business. He also dreams of completing his graduation and wants to become a successful businessman. “If Sahaara hadn’t helped me, I would have ended up in bad company inside prison and lost direction in life,” Ramesh shared. “I am truly thankful to Sahaara for saving my life and for helping me start my own business.” His mother added, “We thank Sahaara from the bottom of our hearts. They stood by us during our darkest times.”

With determination and the right support, Ramesh is building a better future for himself and his family.

Rekha* had never held a book in her hands until she landed in jail. Life had been unkind from the start. Her husband had married another woman and left Rekha to care for their two young sons without any financial or emotional support. Struggling to survive and feed her children, she was desperate. One day, someone handed her a packet of brown sugar, and without understanding the full consequences, she tried to sell it. She was caught and sent to Byculla Jail under the NDPS Act. Inside, Rekha was filled with fear and regret. She had no idea what would happen to her or her children. She would sit in a corner, cry silently, and think about her sons every day.

It was during this difficult time that Sahaara’s team began adult literacy classes at the jail. Rekha joined the class and shared her story. When offered the chance to learn how to read and write, she agreed immediately. She showed determination and interest in every session. Over time, she not only began to read and write but also opened up emotionally, gaining the strength to hope again.

Sahaara staff supported her case and followed up in court. They also checked on her sons to ensure their safety. Eventually, Rekha was granted bail. After her release, she connected with Sahaara again, this time for support in rebuilding her life. She joined a tailoring course in an institute with the help of Sahaara and completed it with dedication. Seeing her hard work, the team gave her a sewing machine. This allowed her to start her own tailoring business from home.

Rekha also resumed her sons’ education. When she could not afford school fees and uniforms, Sahaara stepped in to cover the costs. Today, both boys are back in school and doing well. Rekha continues to benefit from the adult literacy classes run by Sahaara. She can now read important documents, help her sons with schoolwork, and manage her finances.

Rekha’s life has taken a new direction. With no family support, she has done everything on her own—but with Sahaara’s help, she no longer feels alone. Her confidence has grown, and she now dreams of expanding her tailoring business. She wants to become financially independent and raise her children to have a better life.

“I am extremely happy today because I never imagined I would be able to provide a good life for my children. This was only possible because of Sahaara NGO,” Rekha shared with gratitude.

She now dreams of giving her sons a future full of possibilities and making sure they never have to face the difficulties she went through.

Savita* never imagined her life would take such a difficult turn. With three children to raise and no family to support her, she suddenly found herself alone when her husband was imprisoned under serious charges. The loss of the family’s only income pushed her into a deep crisis. Her children were forced to drop out of school, and basic needs like food and shelter became a daily struggle. She was physically weak, suffering from anaemia and a skin condition, and constantly worried about how she would survive and provide for her children.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sahaara staff were conducting a prison survey, and it was during this time that her husband provided the family’s contact details, desperate for someone to help. That act opened the door to a new beginning. When Sahaara staff first met Savita, they were struck by her hopelessness but also saw her determination to change her situation. They decided to support her by enrolling her in a tailoring course. Although she had only studied till the fourth grade, Savita was eager to learn and worked hard to complete her training.

Once she completed the course, Sahaara provided her with a sewing machine so she could begin earning an income from home. Slowly, she started receiving small tailoring orders. With growing confidence, she began conducting tailoring classes for women in her neighbourhood. Today, she trains five women at her home, sharing the skills she learned and helping them find a way to earn too.

Sahaara also stepped in to support her children. The team ensured that all three children resumed their education by paying school fees and providing school uniforms. They also offered food support during the most difficult months. With her children back in school and regular income from her stitching work, Savita began to feel hopeful again.

“I am deeply grateful to Sahaara for providing me with a tailoring course and a sewing machine,” Savita says. “These have empowered me to stand on my own feet, support my children, and meet their needs.”

Today, Savita is physically stronger and emotionally more confident. She makes her own decisions, manages her time wisely, and is now thinking about the future. Her daughter dreams of becoming a nurse, while her son wants to pursue commerce studies. Savita continues to teach and wants to expand her tailoring business so that she can train more women and increase her income.

“I want to see my children in good positions and grow the tailoring classes I started with Sahaara’s help,” she says with pride.

Sneha’s* family includes her husband, Rohan*, and their 9-year-old son, Aarav*. Originally from Karnataka, they now live in Mankhurd, Mumbai. The family faced serious challenges as they tried to rebuild their lives after a difficult situation.

Their troubles began when Sneha gave ₹30,000 to Mahesh, a man who promised to get her a job. When Mahesh failed to deliver and refused to return the money, Sneha and Rohan confronted him and warned they would file a police complaint if he didn’t return the amount. Instead, Mahesh filed a false complaint against them, accusing them of threatening and extorting him. Sneha was sent to Byculla Jail, and Rohan was sent to Thane Jail under serious charges.

During this difficult time, their son, Aarav, stayed with Sneha’s sister, Priya. The separation was hard on the family, especially for Aarav, who missed his parents and struggled without their support. Sneha felt lost and unsure about what would happen next, but she kept hoping for a way to escape her situation.

In August 2023, Sahaara staff met Sneha during a visit to Byculla Jail. She was attending an Adult Literacy class and shared her problems with the staff, asking for legal help. They visited her home in Mankhurd and saw the difficult conditions and the emotional stress Aarav was going through. Realizing the immediate need for help, Sahaara stepped in and arranged for Sneha’s release on bail, covering part of the amount.

After being released, Sneha faced financial problems and could not find work. In November 2024, Sahaara enrolled her in a vocational tailoring course and gave her a sewing machine to help her earn a living. They also supported Aarav’s education so he could continue his studies.

By December 2024, Sneha completed the tailoring course and started her own business. She began earning a steady income, which gave her the ability to support her family. Rohan was also released from prison and joined her in building a stable life for their son.

Looking back, Sneha says, “With Sahaara’s help, we found support and were saved. I feel stronger and more hopeful now.”

Sneha dreams of giving Aarav a good education, owning a home, and finishing her own studies. With the support that Sahaara has given, her family now has stability and the confidence to dream again. Her story shows how timely help and determination can change lives and bring hope for the future.

Nandini* lives in Raigad, Maharashtra, with her husband Sandesh* and their 4-year-old son Rudra*. She completed her 10th grade but found it difficult to secure a stable job. To support her family, she worked as a housemaid, while Sandesh was employed in housekeeping. Life was challenging for them, and they were constantly concerned about Rudra’s future.

In an effort to improve their financial situation, Nandini accepted a job at a local gym. She worked hard, but her employer took advantage of her need for money. He promised her a 20% bonus if she could bring in ₹12 lakhs of business each month. However, his conditions were unethical—he asked her to deceive customers about gym memberships. Feeling pressured, Nandini reluctantly agreed, hoping to provide for her family. Despite her hard work, the promised bonus never materialised. When she questioned her boss about this, he became angry and falsely accused her of misconduct, which led to her arrest and imprisonment in Thane.

Nandini’s imprisonment was a devastating blow for her and her family. She was deeply distressed by the thought of her young son growing up without her, and her concern for Rudra weighed heavily on her while she was in prison. All she wanted was to be reunited with her son.

During her time in prison, Nandini met the staff from Sahaara, who listened to her story and understood her situation. With the help of a partner NGO, Sahaara worked to reduce her bail amount, and they ultimately paid for her bail. Nandini was released, and the joy of being reunited with Rudra was overwhelming. Her family was immensely relieved and grateful to have her back home.

Although Nandini remained unemployed after her release, Sahaara promised to help her find work and explore potential business opportunities. With strong emotional support from her husband Sandesh, they began facing their challenges together. Nandini realised the importance of making careful decisions and decided to start a small clothing business to support her family.

Nandini’s family is now together, and they are working to rebuild their lives. Sandesh expresses his sincere gratitude to the Sahaara staff for their assistance during such a difficult time. Their support, especially during their financial struggles, meant a great deal to the family. Nandini is also thankful for the guidance she received and is committed to building a better future for her family. She looks forward to this new chapter in her life, determined to care for her son Rudra and provide him with a stable, happy home.

This story of Nandini reflects her journey towards a fresh start with the support of her family and Sahaara’s intervention, giving her hope for a better future.

Ashok* is a 44-year-old man from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. He is short and healthy. Ashok’s family includes his wife Pinky, a daughter Unnati who is 23 years old, and a son Trayuk who is 16 years old. Ashok completed his education up to Grade 10.

Ashok and his family lived in Thane district, where he worked as an auto driver and was the only one earning money for the family. However, Ashok had a problem with drinking alcohol, which led to many fights with his wife and neighbours. Despite this, he was financially stable.

One day, Ashok drank too much and fought with his wife and children. His wife filed a complaint against him at the local police station, and in September 2021, he was arrested and sent to Kalyan prison.

In prison, Ashok felt alone because his family refused to help him. He didn’t know about legal matters and couldn’t afford a lawyer or bail. He felt helpless as months went by.

On February 18, 2023, Sahaara staff visited Kalyan prison. Ashok approached them for legal help. The staff saw that Ashok genuinely wanted to change and live a better life. They decided to help him. They collected details of his case and spoke to the prison authorities, who supported this decision. They also visited Ashok’s family who didn’t object to Sahaara’s supporting Ashok.

With Sahaara’s help, Ashok was released on bail on June 26, 2023, after being in prison for 21 months. Sahaara helped pay part of his bail amount. After his release, Ashok had no home to return to, so Sahaara placed him in a shelter home of a partner NGO. They also helped him renew his driving license and get a job as a driver.

Eventually, Ashok moved into his own house. He stopped drinking alcohol and fighting. He started taking care of himself and going to the gym. Ashok had owned an auto rickshaw which he started driving for income.

With Sahaara’s help, Ashok also got a job as a driver at the airport. He goes to work regularly and drives his auto rickshaw part-time. His son Trayuk has now joined him, and they live together. He is taking care of his son, and there are no disputes between them.

Ashok values his job and his relationship with his family. He is working hard to provide for them and stay out of trouble. He is grateful for the help he received from Sahaara. Ashok says, “I am very grateful to Sahaara because when I was in prison for 21 months, there was no one to help me. I approached other NGOs, but no one assisted me. However, Sahaara not only helped me get released from prison but also helped me get back on my feet, and reunite with my son.”

Ashok hopes to start his own transport business and become a successful businessman with Sahaara’s continued guidance and support.
