Namita* was born in a red-light area in Mumbai where her mother worked. Her early years were spent alone at home, with no one to care for her while her mother was away. There was no chance to play safely, no regular meals, and no one to help her learn or understand her emotions. She had no access to education and missed out on what every child deserves—love, safety, and the chance to grow in a good environment.

One day, Sahaara’s Parivartan team came to the community and met her mother. They began visiting often and patiently encouraged her to think about Namita’s future. Slowly, her mother started attending Sahaara’s adult literacy classes. Through many conversations, she understood that a safe place like the Krupalay Girls’ Hostel could help Namita get the care and learning she needed. Finally, when Namita was six, her mother took the difficult but brave step to enrol her into the hostel.

When Namita first arrived, she was quiet and cried a lot. She missed her mother, didn’t talk to other children, and found it hard to settle. The hostel team gave her special attention. She was enrolled in an English-medium school and received extra tuition every day. Sahaara also arranged for a counsellor to meet her once a month. This helped Namita slowly talk about her feelings and feel safe. She was also part of life skills sessions, where she learned about hygiene, self-care, and how to manage her feelings. A mentor worked with her closely, helping her feel more confident.

Bit by bit, Namita began to change. She started playing with the other girls, smiling more, and even trying out music and art. Her teachers noticed that she was slowly opening up. At the hostel, she was looked after physically too—she ate well and especially enjoyed the food served there.

In school, Namita struggled at first. But the teachers and hostel staff kept encouraging her. Now, she scores very well and is a distinction holder. She enjoys reading and painting. “I like painting because I have many pictures in my mind I want to show the world,” she says.

Namita still speaks to her mother every week on the phone. When her mother visits, she proudly tells her about school and hostel life. Her mother says, “I am thankful to Sahaara. They gave my daughter what I never got—a real chance.”

Today, Namita is confident, cheerful, and dreams of becoming a teacher. She also wants to help feed the hungry one day. Her journey shows how, with the right support, a child can truly grow and shine.

Fatima* was only six years old when she was brought into the care of Sahaara’s Krupalay Hostel. She had been living in the red-light area of Ghatkopar, where her mother worked in the sex trade. While her mother was away at work, Fatima was often left alone in unsafe surroundings. The area was filled with strangers and risky situations that no young child should face. With no supervision or learning environment, Fatima had little chance to grow or feel secure.

During one of their field visits, Sahaara’s Pratham staff noticed the dangers Fatima faced. They counselled her mother over many conversations, gently helping her understand the risks. Eventually, her mother agreed to send Fatima to a safer place. In 2023, she was admitted to Krupalay Hostel.

From the start, Krupalay offered more than just a safe roof over Fatima’s head. The hostel provided a calm and caring atmosphere where her needs—emotional, academic, and social—were taken seriously. The staff helped her settle into a structured routine that included healthy meals, rest, school, tuition, and playtime. Each part of her day was designed to encourage her growth and sense of belonging.

Fatima quickly responded to this new environment. She learned personal hygiene, social etiquette, body language, and how to look after her belongings. She received regular mentoring from hostel staff and support from an external counsellor, which helped her understand her feelings and build confidence.

She now studies in Grade 2 and loves going to school. The hostel gave her access to educational resources and a quiet space for homework and reading. Over time, she developed an interest in word puzzles and enjoyed games like UNO and Go Fish with her older sister. She also started colouring, doing art and craft, and playing both indoor and outdoor games.

Fatima’s love for dance began to shine at the hostel, where she had space and encouragement to practise. She choreographed her own steps and participated in the school’s annual day function, performing with joy in the “Little Fairy Dance.” Through such opportunities, Krupalay helped her discover and express her talents.

As Fatima grew, so did her sense of responsibility. She began helping younger children and speaking confidently in group settings. Her teachers praised her good behaviour and dedication, and she was awarded the “Most Disciplined Student” badge in school—an achievement that made her proud and inspired others around her.

Fatima now dreams of becoming a doctor. “I want to become a doctor and help my mummy feel better,” she says. Her mother, who visits regularly, shared, “She looks so happy and confident now. I never imagined this kind of life for her.”

Krupalay Hostel didn’t just give Fatima a place to stay—it gave her room to grow, discover herself, and imagine a better future.

Asha* grew up in a difficult environment. Her father was abusive, and after her parents separated, her mother, Sabina*, struggled to provide for the family. To earn a living, Sabina started working in the red-light area of Turbhe. This meant Asha and her two older brothers were often left alone or in the company of strangers. She witnessed her mother being mistreated, which caused deep emotional distress. With no proper care or guidance, Asha felt unsafe and uncertain about her future.

During Sahaara’s reintegration program, Sabina met the Parivartan staff and shared her concerns about Asha’s well-being. She wanted a safer and better life for her daughter. On 23rd May 2022, Sahaara arranged for Asha’s admission to the Krupalay Girls Hostel. This gave her a secure environment, access to quality education, and opportunities to grow in a positive way.

At the hostel, Asha was enrolled in an English-medium school, where she attended daily tuition sessions to strengthen her academic performance. With the help of dedicated tutors, she improved in subjects like English and Mathematics. She also received weekly counseling sessions to help her manage her emotions and work through past trauma.

The hostel provided a structured routine, teaching Asha life skills such as hygiene, discipline, and etiquette. She learned how to care for herself, interact confidently with others, and express her thoughts freely. Engaging in creative activities like painting, sketching, and crafting helped her develop new interests and boost her confidence. She also found joy in reading and spending time in the hostel’s library.

Physical well-being was also a focus at the hostel. Asha received nutritious meals daily, ensuring proper growth and health. She participated in sports and physical activities, which helped her build strength and develop teamwork skills.

Sabina remained involved in Asha’s progress through Parent-Child Review sessions and regular visits. She also received counseling from Sahaara and was supported in exploring better job opportunities.

Asha says, “I feel at home in the hostel. I love learning new things and spending time with my friends.”

Her mother shares, “I’m so proud of my daughter. She even speaks in English now. Sahaara is helping both of us build a better future.”
