Today, Roma* is no longer living in the red-light area where she spent more than 15 years of her life. She is back in her native place, trying to rebuild her life with the support of her family. As she prepares to begin tailoring work, each small step carries a deep meaning — freedom from debt, freedom from exploitation, and the hope of standing on her own feet again.

Her greatest comfort is knowing that her daughter is safe, studying well, and growing in a Sahaara hostel. For Roma, this means her daughter has the chance to receive the childhood, education, and protection that she herself did not have.

Roma’s story began very differently. At the age of 15, she left her village believing she was going to the city for a job and a better future. Her family was facing severe financial hardship, and she had already been forced to discontinue her education after Grade 7. A person she trusted told her that she could earn a good income and support her parents and siblings. Hoping to help her family, Roma agreed to go.

But when she reached the city, she realised she had been brought to a red-light area. She was young, confused, and afraid. She wanted to return home, but pressure, manipulation, and the burden of her family’s poverty trapped her in commercial sexual exploitation. For more than 15 years, Roma lived through abuse, trauma, and daily exploitation. During this time, she became a mother and continued trying to support her family.

Sahaara staff first met Roma during regular field visits in the red-light area. At first, change was not immediate. But through consistent interaction and relationship-building, Roma slowly began to trust the team and share her concerns. One of her deepest worries was her daughter’s safety, education, and future. With Sahaara’s guidance, Roma decided to enrol her daughter in a Sahaara hostel, where she could study and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

Sahaara also supported Roma herself. She was connected with adult literacy classes, vocational training in women’s apparel, mentoring, and counselling. Tailoring training gave her a practical skill for earning outside the red-light area. Adult literacy strengthened her basic learning abilities, while mentoring helped her identify goals and think about life beyond exploitation.

Counselling gave Roma a safe space to speak about her experiences and challenges. It also helped her make informed decisions, work towards clearing her debts, and prepare to leave the sex trade permanently. With support from Sahaara and her family, especially her parents, Roma cleared her debts, exited the sex trade, and returned to her native place.

Roma says, “I am grateful to Sahaara for supporting me and continuing to follow up on my progress.” Her daughter shares, “I am happy to be in a good hostel and that my mother is no longer working in the red-light area.”

Today, Roma is preparing to start her own tailoring business. Her daughter continues her education in a safe environment. Roma’s greatest hope is to see her daughter complete her education, succeed in life, and build a secure future. Her story reminds us that when a woman receives patient support, livelihood skills, counselling, and a safe future for her child, she can begin to rebuild a life of dignity and hope.

Today, Rani* is focused on growing her small vegetable business.

Each day of work is a step towards the life she wants to build — a life where her income comes through her own effort, where she can make decisions for herself, and where dignity replaces the pain of her past. Her dream is to become financially stable through her own work.

Rani’s childhood took a difficult turn when she was still very young. At the age of 14, she was sent to another city to support her elder sister, who was pregnant and needed help managing the household. What was meant to be temporary slowly became permanent.

As a young girl, Rani was exposed to an unsafe environment in the red-light area. By the age of 16, she began facing pressure from within her family to enter the sex trade. For nearly two years, she resisted, often avoiding such situations and feeling deeply distressed. But with constant pressure and little support, she was eventually forced into it.

For years, Rani lived with the weight of this experience. Yet somewhere within her, the desire for a different life remained. She wanted a way to earn with dignity, but leaving the trade required courage, support, planning, and someone who would walk with her step by step.

Sahaara came into contact with Rani around seven years ago during regular field visits in the red-light area. At first, the interactions were limited. Trust had to be built slowly. Through consistent engagement, mentoring, and counselling, the Sahaara team helped Rani reflect on her situation and begin exploring alternative options.

Gradually, Rani began to believe that change was possible.

Through Project Parivartan, she received continuous mentoring, counselling, and rehabilitation support. The team guided her step by step as she planned her exit from the trade and explored livelihood options. Sahaara then provided business support to help her start a small vegetable business, giving her a practical way to earn a dignified income.

Rani’s partner was also engaged during this process and encouraged to support her transition. With consistent guidance and emotional support, Rani’s mindset began to shift. She grew in confidence and started taking practical steps towards independence.

Today, Rani is clear about her goals and willing to work hard to achieve them. Her vegetable business is not only a source of income; it is a sign of her determination to build a stable and dignified way of life.

Reflecting on her journey, Rani says, “I am deeply grateful to Sahaara for guiding me, supporting me through difficult times, and helping me find a dignified and stable way to earn a living.”

Her partner shares, “We are thankful to Sahaara for the support and guidance given to us.”

With continued support, Rani hopes to strengthen her livelihood and become financially independent. Her journey also has the potential to encourage other women in similar situations, helping them see that change is possible and that alternative livelihoods can open the way to dignity and hope.

Today, Meena* leaves for work knowing that her income comes from a safer and more dignified source. She now earns by packing vegetables at a company. It may look like a simple job, but for Meena, it represents a life she once struggled to imagine — a life outside the sex trade, free from addiction, and moving towards stability.

Reaching this point was not easy. Meena’s life had been marked by nearly 20 years of exploitation, instability, addiction, and emotional distress. She grew up in a financially disadvantaged family, and after marriage, she faced abuse and lack of support. She worked in agricultural fields to meet her daily needs, but the income was not enough to give her stability.

Hoping for better employment, Meena travelled to different cities in search of work. Instead, she faced repeated exploitation and was eventually brought into the sex trade. Even after escaping one difficult situation, financial pressure and limited livelihood options pushed her back into vulnerability. For many years, she remained in the sex trade, moving from place to place, while also struggling with dependence on alcohol and cigarettes. Emotionally, she felt broken and had little hope that her life could change.

Sahaara staff first met Meena during a field visit in 2024. At that time, she needed support with identity documents and help finding employment outside the sex trade. The Parivartan team began engaging with her regularly, slowly helping her identify a safer and more sustainable livelihood path.

Through Project Parivartan, Meena received documentation assistance, counselling, de-addiction support, life skills guidance, and help finding alternative employment. The team also counselled her partner, helping him understand how he could support Meena in leaving the sex trade. His involvement became an important part of her journey towards a more stable life.

With continued guidance from Sahaara and support from her partner, Meena decided to leave the sex trade. She found employment at a company, where she now earns an income through vegetable packing. Sahaara continues to support the family through ration assistance and is also helping her partner with the process of opening a bank account.

The change in Meena has been significant. She is no longer dependent on alcohol or cigarettes. She is now working, and her partner is also employed and continues to support her. Counselling and life skills support have helped her become more open about sharing her feelings and challenges, manage her emotions better, and strengthen her mental wellbeing.

Meena says, “I am thankful to Sahaara for helping me obtain documents, find a job, and begin a new life.” Her partner shares, “I am grateful to Sahaara for supporting her to leave the sex trade and move towards a better life.”

Today, the woman who once felt emotionally broken and without hope is building a life based on employment, mutual support, and greater stability. Her journey is still continuing, but she and her partner are living with greater dignity and hope for the future. With continued mentoring and practical support, Meena hopes to maintain her employment, strengthen her family’s stability, and one day settle into a peaceful and secure life.

Rani* is 35 years old and originally from West Bengal. After her husband passed away from cancer, she received no support from her in-laws. With no one else to turn to and three children to care for, she returned to her parents' home. But she knew she couldn’t rely on them for long, so she began looking for work. A friend told her about job opportunities in Mumbai and convinced her to come along. However, instead of helping her find work, the friend brought her to a red-light area in Bhiwandi.

Rani did not want to be there. For seven months, she was forced to work and was not paid even once. To cope, she began chewing tobacco and became irritable and withdrawn. She didn’t trust anyone and found it hard to focus or think clearly. She didn’t know the local language well, which made her feel even more lost. At this time, Sahaara’s team met her during their field visits. Rani was quiet and hesitant to speak at first. But with regular contact and kind conversations, she slowly began to open up.

The team offered her mentoring, counselling, and guidance on how to manage her finances. She also took part in a few training sessions where she learned to make cloth bags. Sahaara helped her with medical care during the pandemic and gave her support when she was unwell.

Rani underwent the micro-entrepreneurship training and this created an excitement within her to start a small business and take steps towards becoming free from the sex trade. She was given basic literacy classes as well which improved her confidence. The Sahaara staff even spoke with her partner, who became a strong support. Together, they helped Rani move out of the red-light area and into a safer neighbourhood.

Her partner said, “We are thankful to Sahaara for helping us relocate. It gave Rani the chance to live a better life.” With her children back in her hometown—her sons working and her daughter continuing her education—Rani is now living with more peace and hope. She is no longer part of the trade and is looking forward to starting a small vegetable-selling business in her new area.

Rani says, “Sahaara stood with me during my darkest days. They helped me when I was sick, gave me confidence, and showed me that I can live a different life. I know I can count on them.”

Today, Rani is safe, hopeful, and making plans for her future. She is no longer stuck in a cycle of pain and fear. With encouragement and support, she is taking steps towards becoming self-reliant and bringing stability to her life once again.

Jagruti*, a 46-year-old woman from Hyderabad, had a difficult childhood. She lost her parents when she was very young and had to live with her relatives, who did not care for her. At the age of 10, she ran away from home with some friends who were visiting Mumbai. But soon after reaching the city, she got separated from them and was lost. A kind lady took her in and raised her until she was 18 years old. Later, Jagruti started working as a housemaid alongside this lady.

During her regular visits for work, Jagruti befriended another woman who, after some months, took her for a city tour, and on that pretext, led her to the red-light area in Ghatkopar. Since she was unfamiliar with travel in Mumbai and didn’t know how to return home, Jagruti got trapped in the sex trade. She was very young and did not want to do this work. She was beaten, forced, and had no one to turn to for help. Over time, she got into a relationship with a man and had five children. However, he never supported her or their children, and Jagruti had to raise them on her own.

Sahaara staff first met Jagruti during one of their field visits in Ghatkopar. They spoke to her and slowly built trust. Seeing her situation, they offered help with her children’s education and hostel admissions. With their support, her children moved into hostels where they could study safely and grow up in a healthy environment. Two of her children are now in aftercare and continue to stay connected with their mother.

Apart from helping her children, Sahaara also supported Jagruti directly. She joined programmes like adult literacy, mentoring, medical support, and awareness sessions. One of the biggest challenges Jagruti faced was when her son went missing. The Sahaara team helped her file an FIR, and they worked with the police to find him. This gave her strength and trust in herself.

Jagruti started attending regular mentoring sessions where she was encouraged to think about her future. Before this, she used to depend on others for every decision, often influenced by friends. But now, she feels more confident and takes decisions on her own. With Sahaara’s help, she found a job as a housekeeper and has now exited the sex trade. She goes to work regularly and does her job with dedication.

She says, “I was not able to think or take decisions for myself. But the Sahaara team helped me. They supported my children in getting good education and helped me find a good job and a better life.”

Jagruti’s dream is simple. She wants to live a peaceful and respectful life and be with her children as they grow.

Farida* came to Mumbai with her husband, full of hope for a better future. But that dream was soon crushed. Her husband left her for another woman, abandoning her and their young son. With nowhere to turn, Farida asked her brother for help. He promised to find her work through someone his wife knew, but instead, he betrayed her. He took her to Grant Road, left her with a stranger, and never returned. Farida had been sold into the red-light trade without her knowledge.

She was not willing to accept this life. For three months, she was beaten by the brothel keeper for refusing to work. Her heart was broken—betrayed by her husband and now by her brother. She stayed there for eight months until a customer took pity on her. He helped her escape and left her at her brother’s house in Nerul. But her brother refused to take her in. A friend then introduced her to Ashfaq, who convinced her family to let him marry her by promising to take care of her. But soon after the marriage, he too forced her into the trade—this time in the Turbhe red-light area. Two years later, Farida gave birth to a baby girl, her second child.

As years passed, Ashfaq became abusive, often beating her and even mistreating her son. That’s when Farida found Sahaara’s Project Parivartan during a field visit in Turbhe. She opened up to the team about her situation, and with their support, she filed a police complaint against her husband. This was a turning point.

Sahaara stepped in to support her in every way. Her daughter was admitted to a safe hostel for children. Farida completed Sahaara’s adult literacy programme and began attending life skills and social skills sessions. She received personal counselling that helped her express her pain and start healing. She then joined Sahaara’s vocational training centre and successfully completed a tailoring course. Seeing her dedication, Sahaara gifted her a sewing machine and supported her relocation by covering part of her housing deposit. She now lives outside the red-light area and is preparing to start her own nightgown business.

Sahaara also continues to counsel her husband Ashfaq, who has started working as a carpenter and is taking more responsibility for the family. Farida’s children are now safe, happy, and studying well.

“For years I wanted to leave the trade but didn’t know how. Sahaara didn’t just show me the way—they held my hand through it,” Farida shared. “I’ve learned to read, to sew, and most importantly, to believe in a better life.”

Her dream is to grow her business, educate her children well, and live a peaceful, independent life with her family.

When Rekha* was just 17, she believed she was stepping into a better future. A man from her village in Nepal, who had gained her family's trust, promised her a well-paying job in India. As a young widow with a small child, she thought this opportunity would ease her struggles. But everything changed during the journey. She and another woman were given something to drink, and when she woke up, she realised she had been trafficked to Delhi and then sold into the Kamathipura red-light area in Mumbai. There, she was forced into the trade, beaten, denied food, and pushed into substance abuse. For years, her life spiralled into darkness and despair.

Rekha spent more than 16 years in various red-light areas, including Bhandup and finally Bhiwandi. Addiction, broken relationships, and hopelessness became her reality. It was during this time that Sahaara staff, through Project Parivartan at the Bhiwandi location, met Rekha during a field visit. They patiently built trust with Rekha through regular mentoring during their outreach visits. Even though she was initially reluctant and distracted due to addiction, they kept encouraging her to consider exiting the trade and building a new life.

During the lockdown, Sahaara provided regular ration support, ensuring her basic needs were met. This was a turning point. With a foundation of consistent care and encouragement, Rekha began attending individual counselling sessions and slowly opened up about her trauma. The staff identified her interest in learning something new and introduced her to a vocational course in soy wax cube making. Step by step, she learned the process, gained confidence, and started producing items herself.

Recognising her need for a steady income, Sahaara also helped her secure a job in a local food packaging company. To support her further, they continued providing mentoring, emotional support, and health guidance as she lives with HIV. When she struggled to pay the deposit to relocate out of the red-light area, Sahaara stepped in with financial support, helping her leave that environment once and for all.

With these multiple layers of support—counselling, vocational training, financial assistance, job placement, and relocation—Rekha began to rebuild her life. Today, she balances her full-time job and her part-time soy wax making work with dignity. She has stability, emotional peace, and the motivation to build a better life for herself and her family.

“I’m thankful to Sahaara for being there when I had nothing. They didn’t just help me learn a skill—they gave me the strength to dream again,” Rekha shared.

Rekha now dreams of opening a small shop and creating a life of dignity for herself and her loved ones.

Ashwini* grew up in a simple home in Kolkata with her parents, two brothers, and one sister. When she was 11, her sister took her to Bhiwandi, promising better opportunities. Instead, Ashwini was left in a rented room, and after a month, she was forced into a sex trade. Each time she refused, her sister beat her until she obeyed. Ashwini had to serve many customers every day and faced harsh treatment from her sister as well. She was not allowed to keep her earnings, which made it hard for her to buy even basic things for herself. Later, her sister sold her to another person, and the situation became even worse. She felt she had no way out.

During a field visit, staff members from Sahaara Charitable Society met Ashwini. They learned about her problems and invited her to their Vocational Training Centre (VTC). There, she received lessons on health and money management, along with counseling and tailoring skills. Sahaara staff also gave her emotional support. These steps helped Ashwini realize that she could leave the sex trade. When her partner stood by her, she moved to Surat to begin a new life.

In Surat, Sahaara provided her with a sewing machine so she could use her tailoring skills to earn a living. This allowed her to care for her husband, daughter, and herself without depending on anyone else. Later, her partner had an accident and could not work for some time. Ashwini became the main earner, making clothes and saving money to pay household bills. Sahaara stayed in touch, offering help and checking on her progress. They also looked for work opportunities for her partner as he healed.

Ashwini now hopes to grow her tailoring business and save enough money to give her family a brighter future. She is proud of the new path she has chosen and feels stronger every day.

Heena* was only 13 when her parents decided she should marry someone she did not know. She had feelings for someone else, but her parents did not consider her wishes. At this difficult time, her aunt in Mumbai convinced her to run away, promising her a job and freedom. Trusting her, Heena left her village, hoping for a better future. But instead of helping her, her aunt sold her into the sex trade in Bhiwandi. At first, Heena resisted, but threats and fear soon made her surrender. She spent the next 15 years trapped in this life, facing daily struggles and having no clear way out.

During a field visit, staff from Sahaara Charitable Society met Heena and started talking with her. They invited her to their centre, where she attended sessions on health, money management, and vocational skills. Over time, Sahaara helped her start a small dosa business in the red-light area, giving her a safer way to earn money. They also provided rent and ration support when she faced financial difficulties. Through mentoring and counseling, Heena began thinking about leaving the sex trade. She joined a tailoring course at the centre and later found a part-time job at a sanitary pad manufacturing unit, giving her an alternate income source.

Heena’s family, except for her mother, does not know about her work in Mumbai. Her mother has been encouraging her to return home. With Sahaara’s help, Heena has new skills and safer ways to earn a living. She is now financially independent and feels hopeful about the future. She plans to leave the trade for good and return to her family. For now, she continues working at the sanitary pad unit while planning for her next step.

Heena says, “I learned a lot about the world through the staff at Sahaara. Their interventions have helped me learn to love myself again.”

Her partner also supports her and says, “I am encouraging her to exit the trade and am ready to help her in any way necessary.”

Isha*, a 37-year-old woman from Bihar, faced many hardships in life. She was married at a young age to Amit* (name changed), who was mentally unstable. They lived with Amit’s family, but life was difficult. Her husband and mother-in-law were controlling and suspicious. They accused her unfairly, restricted her movements, and often abused her. She felt trapped but had no support from her own family.

At 18, Isha decided to leave and moved to Mumbai with someone she trusted, hoping to find work. However, she was deceived and forced into sex work in Bhiwandi. She remained in the trade for many years, struggling with debt and uncertainty about her future. She felt hopeless and had no plan for a better life.

During a field visit, Sahaara staff met Isha and started speaking with her. Over time, they built trust and encouraged her to explore new opportunities. She joined the Vocational Training Centre in Bhiwandi to learn tailoring. At first, she was nervous, but with practice, she improved her skills and began enjoying her work. She worked hard, spending eight hours a day learning to make bags.

With Sahaara’s support, Isha received adult literacy training, work readiness skills, and vocational training. After completing her course, she secured a job in an export production company. She also moved into a group home in Vasai, where she plans to start a new life.

Isha’s partner has been supportive of her journey and plans to move to Vasai with her in the coming months. Sahaara staff are also helping him find a job so they can settle together.

Isha shares, “I always dreamed of working in a good company. This job is more than I expected.” With her hard work and support, she is moving towards a stable future.
