Today, Rani* is focused on growing her small vegetable business.

Each day of work is a step towards the life she wants to build — a life where her income comes through her own effort, where she can make decisions for herself, and where dignity replaces the pain of her past. Her dream is to become financially stable through her own work.

Rani’s childhood took a difficult turn when she was still very young. At the age of 14, she was sent to another city to support her elder sister, who was pregnant and needed help managing the household. What was meant to be temporary slowly became permanent.

As a young girl, Rani was exposed to an unsafe environment in the red-light area. By the age of 16, she began facing pressure from within her family to enter the sex trade. For nearly two years, she resisted, often avoiding such situations and feeling deeply distressed. But with constant pressure and little support, she was eventually forced into it.

For years, Rani lived with the weight of this experience. Yet somewhere within her, the desire for a different life remained. She wanted a way to earn with dignity, but leaving the trade required courage, support, planning, and someone who would walk with her step by step.

Sahaara came into contact with Rani around seven years ago during regular field visits in the red-light area. At first, the interactions were limited. Trust had to be built slowly. Through consistent engagement, mentoring, and counselling, the Sahaara team helped Rani reflect on her situation and begin exploring alternative options.

Gradually, Rani began to believe that change was possible.

Through Project Parivartan, she received continuous mentoring, counselling, and rehabilitation support. The team guided her step by step as she planned her exit from the trade and explored livelihood options. Sahaara then provided business support to help her start a small vegetable business, giving her a practical way to earn a dignified income.

Rani’s partner was also engaged during this process and encouraged to support her transition. With consistent guidance and emotional support, Rani’s mindset began to shift. She grew in confidence and started taking practical steps towards independence.

Today, Rani is clear about her goals and willing to work hard to achieve them. Her vegetable business is not only a source of income; it is a sign of her determination to build a stable and dignified way of life.

Reflecting on her journey, Rani says, “I am deeply grateful to Sahaara for guiding me, supporting me through difficult times, and helping me find a dignified and stable way to earn a living.”

Her partner shares, “We are thankful to Sahaara for the support and guidance given to us.”

With continued support, Rani hopes to strengthen her livelihood and become financially independent. Her journey also has the potential to encourage other women in similar situations, helping them see that change is possible and that alternative livelihoods can open the way to dignity and hope.
