Project Pratham

Educational support for marginalized children

Goal

Children in and around red-light areas develop educational and life competencies in a supportive eco-system and become positive contributors to society.

Equal opportunities remain out of reach for many children living in and around red-light areas. A study by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) reveals that these children often face abuse, discrimination, and stigma, leading to social isolation. Many attend poorly resourced schools, resulting in low confidence levels, limited academic performance, and a sense of failure. Parental neglect, the absence of strong role models, and the negative influences of their environment further affect their behaviour and choices, making them vulnerable to delinquent behaviour.

To address these challenges, Project Pratham implements several key interventions. These include early childhood education, remedial and supplementary education, and sponsorships for school and college education to ensure continuous learning opportunities. The programme also offers spoken English and computer literacy training to equip children with relevant skills for the modern world. Age-appropriate life skills and socio-emotional learning are introduced to build their resilience and help them make positive life choices.

Mid-day meals are provided to address nutritional needs and ensure children are ready to learn. Peer education and youth-focused initiatives empower adolescents to develop confidence and leadership skills. Parent and community training sessions are conducted to foster a supportive environment for children’s holistic growth.

With these efforts, Project Pratham aims to give children a chance for a better and brighter future.

Total Number of Participants: 442 children and 83 parents served in 2024-25
